The museums of the 21st century must be places of meeting and citizen exchange, where the knowledge generated is able to provide tools and social empowerment, generating a democratizing space.

The present project captures this spirit, where the Maritime Museum of Mallorca surpasses the building, being an integrated space and open to the citizens of Palma, the rest of the island of Mallorca and the whole of the Balearic Islands. It ceases to be a pharaonic work, to be a work adjusted to the port and the city, integrating tradition and modernity, where sustainability, accessibility and knowledge are the axes of work towards a future that is built from the present in a way diverse. A building that meets the needs of a museum so that it becomes a space for research and conservation of heritage, while a place of dissemination and mediation between it and the visitor is local or foreign, becoming a universal meeting place .

It mixes the tradition of the «Mestres d'Aixa», the knowledge accumulated in the different collections linked to material heritage, intangible heritage and oral memory as a source of knowledge and accumulated experience, diverse and rich, for future generations. Part of this knowledge becomes living heritage, given that the Fishermen's Guild of Sant Pere de Palma and the Llotja are integrated into the museum, not as decorative elements of it, but as its active agents.

It presents a unique opportunity to position the Port of Palma in the world by transforming the nautical industry into a cultural industry, with the help of the sea, tradition, knowledge and biodiversity. The port is open to the public and to the world through culture and knowledge, where the public is no longer merely a spectator, but an actor, co-producer of possible activities in different areas of the museum such as the library, the auditorium, educational spaces and creative areas.

The present project makes Mallorca take a final step in the transition to a better and more sustainable world, where the goals of the millennium are materialized by the hand of culture and reflection on the world around us, its problems and their opportunities. All of them are housed in a transversal maritime museum.
